We just moved into our home and it had a b-hyve 16 zone timer installed with all 16 zones used. I have it set up on the app on my phone but where does the app get the soil moisture level from? When I check most zones they show 17%-52% give or take. I then set up smart watering entering the info like no slope, full sun, sprinkler type etc, and it immediately said 100% for soil level on all zones I set up. That was 2 weeks ago and they all still say 100%. The zones I don’t have smart watering on say 52% or so.

In addition, the previous owner’s landscaper had each zone set to run for 10-20 minutes at most and the lawn is beautiful, but with smart watering I had to disable it as the first morning it ran it ran each zone for 60 minutes which is way too much. Are there sensors or something it’s getting the moisture level from or is it just estimating it or something?

I also just wanted to add that I really don’t know what type of soil to pick as none seem to be relevant. I have normal topsoil, like black earth you find in most of Ontario, it’s not clay or sand or anything. When I click not sure what type I have, all the sample photos are of beach looking beige sand. Mine is black, like most yards where you put down topsoil and then lay the grass.
